Stopping Smoking
Why Stop?
Over 100,000 people die each year in the UK from smoking-related diseases. Every cigarette shortens your life by an average of five and a half minutes. Babies of smokers are, on average, 200 grams lighter than those of non-smokers.
How To Stop
It is all about motivation. Without the real desire to stop, you won't succeed. Set a date soon when you intend to stop. Tell all your friends, relations and work colleagues that you're giving up on that day and ask for their support. On the big day, keep busy. Avoid situations where the desire to smoke will be strongest, such as whilst driving.
Finally, put away the money that you would have spent on cigarettes each day to save up for some special treat as a reward.
Remember, you're a non-smoker.
All our practice nurses offer help to stop smoking - for your first consultation please book a double appointment.
Please download the questionnaire below and bring it with you.

Advice For Travellers

(deliver to reception) and make an appointment with the practice nurse.

You should allow four weeks for any necessary immunisations (eight weeks if complete
courses of tetanus and/or polio are needed). There may be a charge for non-NHS
injections and anti-malarial tablets can only be given by private prescription.
Pack a small first aid kit containing:
• Adhesive dressings
• Insect repellent
• Antiseptic cream
• Water purification tablets
• Rehydration sachets
When abroad, check on
the quality of drinking water - if in doubt, drink only bottled water.
Beware of the sun! Minimise exposure, use a wide-brimmed hat and use a high factor
sunscreen, particularly in the first few days. Children and babies should be
closely watched so that they do not get burned.
On your return, if you fall ill or have a fever, don’t forget to tell your
doctor that you have travelled abroad.
